The Pelican
is an early Christian symbol for Christ. In the ancient
world, it was believed that the pelican's flesh did not
decay after death, and was therefore a symbol of immortality.
In this image, the Pelican
pierces itself to feed its young. Saint Thomas Aquinas composed
a hymn to Christ echoing the sacrificial offering of Christ
on the Cross symbolized by the pelican.
